01/Overview
Velux & roof windows

A roof window changes a room. Once. So do it right.

Proper flashing, correct pitch, insulation continuity and weathertightness. A roof window is a cut through the covering, the underlay and the thermal envelope. Every layer has to be re-formed properly, or it will leak, whistle or run with condensation. We install to Velux specification and finish the internal reveal ready for decoration.

A roof window is a roof. Not a window. It has to drain.

09/FAQs
FAQs

Velux and roof windows, common questions.

Can you install a Velux in any roof?

Almost always. We install Velux and equivalent roof windows in slate, clay tile, concrete tile and profiled metal roofs, as well as flat roofs using dedicated flat-roof kits. The key checks are pitch, rafter spacing and whether the loft space is habitable. We confirm all three at survey. Request a free survey.

Do I need planning permission for a Velux?

For most homes a standard roof window is permitted development, provided it does not project more than 150mm above the roof plane and is not on the principal elevation of a designated area. Listed buildings and conservation areas need consent. We advise on this at survey and can liaise with your local authority if needed.

How long does a Velux installation take?

A single new Velux install is usually one to two working days for the roof works, plus a further day for internal plaster finishing. A straight like-for-like replacement of an existing window can be completed in a single day. Multiple windows or structural trimming take longer and we confirm the schedule in writing before we start.

Can I get an escape or fire window?

Yes. If your loft is being converted into a habitable room, Building Regulations require a means of escape window. We install Velux GPL and CVP fire escape roof windows that meet the required clear opening area, and we handle the compliance detail with your Building Control officer.

What if my ceiling is sloped?

That is the norm for loft rooms and it does not stop a Velux install. We trim rafters correctly, insulate the reveal to maintain the thermal envelope, and finish the internal reveal flush with the existing ceiling. The finish is plastered, sanded and ready for decoration.

Do you install Velux blinds?

Yes. We supply and fit the full Velux blind range, including blackout, roller, pleated, venetian and awning blinds. Blinds can be manual, solar-powered or wired into a mains supply, and we can integrate them with the Velux Active smart control system on request.

Can you replace a broken existing Velux?

Yes, and it is often more cost-effective than repair on older units. We stock and can supply direct-replacement Velux units for any generation, install to the original opening, renew the flashing kit and finish the internal reveal like-for-like. Most replacements are completed in a single day.

What pitch does a Velux need?

Standard Velux centre-pivot and top-hung windows fit roofs pitched between 15 and 90 degrees, though flashing kits vary by pitch band. Roofs shallower than 15 degrees need a dedicated flat-roof or low-pitch installation kit. We measure the pitch accurately at survey and specify the correct model and flashing kit.

Do you handle plastering inside?

Yes. We finish the internal reveal properly, plaster the reveal boards to the surrounding ceiling and leave the opening ready for decoration. It is one of the most common reasons clients come to us after a general builder has left a window fitted but not finished.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Clarkson Roofing is fully insured. Materials carry the manufacturer warranty on top, typically 10 years on the Velux unit itself.
